Sarah Albisser
Sarah Albisser was born in Switzerland 1976. She completed her studies as a contemporary dancer in 1996 at the Merce Cunningham Studio in New York. Her career as an independent dancer and choreographer includes founding the dance theatre company Waterproof in 2001. The company has had successful performances in Switzerland and International with awards in 2002 and 2003 for her work as a dancer and choreographer.
She received a certificate in art from Farbmuehle in Lucerne, Switzerland in 2006 followed by a one year painting course at the Art Station in Auckland, New Zealand. Since then Sarah has been developing her style and technique. Her artwork has been exhibited in Switzerland, New Zealand and Los Angeles and is being held in private collections around the world.
Sarah has been experimenting with black and white portraits over the past fourteen years. Fascination with faces, expressions, body and gesture has been a life long experience for her. Sarah’s work captures feelings, moods and mental states. “Our character is reflected through small, individual, unique but significant gestures which can change over time or sometimes even get stronger”. She has not previously used images or photos of faces, most of her portraits are developed through improvisation. Working with the same theme over a long period of time has given her a wider view of possibilities.
“Over the past seventeen years I have been experimenting with black and white female characters. I was always fascinated with faces, expression, body and gestures. In my work I capture, feelings, moods and mental states.”
Sarah’s work is inspired by strong female characters, who are original, and have a powerful presence.
“One of my favourite quotes by Oscar Wilde is: Be yourself, everyone else is already taken. For me art is an expression of freedom. It’s connecting with your subconscious mind and translating this onto a visual expression.”

Sarah’s diver paintings are about being present and feeling fully alive. She says “I have always enjoyed watching the cliff divers. The training and discipline it takes is enormous. The adrenaline rush, excitement, fear and so many more feelings packed into just a few seconds. Having a past as a gymnast and dancer I feel like I can relate to the divers, there is some similarity.”
