Based on a Northland (NZ) ‘mystery’ of the remains of an old timber hulled wreck that used to
appear and disappear under the constantly shifting sands of a west coast ocean beach and the
speculation – linked in with the ‘discovery’ of an old Portugese style soldier’s helmet – that it
was possibly a Portugese caravel, perhaps blown of course and lost coming to grief upon the
Northland coast. The painting is a pictorial narrative of that fateful event.
