Anu-Dhyana
Anu-Dhyana is a Contemporary New Zealand artist, Wellington-based with over 30 years of experience in painting and 15 years in video art. Her work explores the unseen energies flowing through the body and cosmos. A graduate of Ilam School of Fine Arts (1990) and holder of an MFA in Video from the College of Creative Arts at Massey University (2007), her education at Ilam developed her understanding of color and spatial dynamics, while Willem de Kooning’s gestural action painting profoundly influenced her formative style.
Rooted in her long-standing yoga practice, Anu-Dhyana’s art seeks to connect with source energy—the universe and the higher self. Her name reflects her spiritual evolution, transitioning from Dhyana (Sanskrit for meditation/concentration) in 2001 to Anu-Dhyana in 2023, meaning “Chasing after God,” symbolizing her belief in humanity as fractals of divine energy.
Drawing from Tibetan Thangka Mandalas and Yogic Chakra diagrams, her work blends sacred geometry, fractal-like marks, and dynamic abstract expressionism. Focusing on sensation rather than appearance, she translates subtle energy currents into vivid marks and colors. She reimagines chakras as radiant stars within energetic fields of vortexes and magnetic dynamics, connecting the earth and cosmos. Her themes also extend to the Elements, Earth Elementals, and the balance of masculine and feminine energies.
Anu-Dhyana has expanded her practice into VJing, creating immersive video art that integrates her paintings with layered visuals, forming “moving paintings.” Both her paintings and video works act as energetic activations, fostering grounding, meditation, and connection to source energy.
